The new Back to Basics ‘Baby Steps’ collection from Dovecraft is really sweet, featuring giraffes, elephants, owls and lots of lovely patterns perfect for new baby cards.  The colours of lemon, grey and white are really nice and lend themselves to other card themes too.  Here I have used the papers to create a paper pieced owl as a Graduation card.

Step By Step:

Draw a simple outline of an owl shape onto the back of yellow & white polka dot paper from the 6x6 pack.  (Basically just a circle elongated with ears at the top!)

Cut a strip of grey & yellow zig zag paper and adhere across owl body, trimming edges flush.  Add a congratulations sentiment topper to the centre.

Cut 2 large wings (just large petal / leaf shapes) from the congratulations text paper, Using a black pen draw faux stitching around the inside edge of all the owl paper pieces.

Adhere the owl to a 6x6 grey card from the pack, with fold across the top.  Position wings and adhere using 3D foam squares.

Using the FE circle dies, die cut 2 small black card circles and 2 larger white card circles.  Position onto card front, slightly overlapping the white circles.  Slip a dark grey bunting triangle shape in the centre as a beak and when happy with position adhere into place using d/s tape and glue.

To create the cap, cut an elongated diamond shape from black card, also cut a smaller rectangle, curving bottom and sides slightly.  Glue diamond cap top to cap bottom and add cap to owls head using 3D foam squares.  Take yellow & grey twine and cut lengths to make a tassel, add a dab of glue onto the twine to help hold in place and then glue to underside of grad cap.

To finish add a large grey adhesive pearl to each eye and add a panel of owl pattern paper to inside of card.

Brilliant. Is this the first time I've seen the 'Baby Steps' papers used for a theme other than for a baby card? I don't know. But I have to say - the owl and worded congratulations patterned paper work perfectly for a graduation card! I love the cap and tassle on this super cute "cut" and "stitched" owl!

Thank you :) I used to sew little sock owls and felt owls and thought it would be a good theme for a card, the congratulations text and the pattern papers seem to work well especially for a Grad card :)

Love this card your faux stitching is so cool, it's a technique i must try more of, it is so effective X

pollypurplehorse

Thank you, this was a really quick 'faux stitching' just a black pen. Sometimes I try and make it more of a feature by piercing holes and then joining with a black fineliner pen or a white gel pen for a different look, the white looks especially good on vellum I think. Do give it a try, it's really easy and would love to see your makes :)
