Re: knitted socks
I too had a knitting machine when my girls were little, I loved it :) . I sold mine though when I moved house so now I have grandchildren I have started to hand knit again. I too taught myself to crochet - ipad earphones and you tube - perfect :) Sylvia

When finished I'll take a piccy.. :D I will say once you get into it Its very addictive... cant wait to start/do more now... think I will be giving them out as xmas prezzies or Giving to the "Homeless" hostel over in Liverpool or in Chester... turning the Heel was Not as Challenging as I thought it would be and they make a change from doing a cable pattern all the time.... the pattern Im doing is not a Chunky "wellie"sock pattern Its a Nice light ankle sock one to go under trousers/jeans etc... I think Many woman knitted socks to send to soldiers on the front during the war years- amazing how Old Trends are making a come back and its Fabulous to Re-visit them using Todays technology and New materials.....
[/quote:1skbjjpp] Annette, what size needles do you use with the zigzag yarn? I knit loosely so I expect I will need to buy a set of dpns a size below what the pattern says.x

Re: knitted socks
It sounds like fun Annette and as you say it gets you out for a few hours. Thank you for the info on the needle sizes. I inherited dpn's from my mother-in-law who obviously knitted socks! These might be a bit big for my loose knitting but it's my first sock so I guess baby 4 ply is an acceptable yarn too lol. I have turned the heel which was actually easier than I thought it would be and I'm now knitting the length of the foot. Goodness knows how you ladies can knit a pair of socks in a day! I am in awe. I'm still getting used to juggling needles!

Re: knitted socks
Ta Da! I have completed my first sock! I'm very pleased with it even though it's too big. I knew it would be big, the size 3mm needles were too thick for my slack knitting. The question now is do I knit another big one or should I start again and do a pair that will fit now I know I can do it. :?: :?: :?: x

Re: knitted socks
What are you Sock knitters like? :? :? :? I don't want to knit socks I don't want to knit at all but you've awoken a spark in me that was longing for the feel of wool , and didn't know it . So what have I done today? I've been to the wool shop and I've come home with 3 large balls of wool a pattern and two crochet hooks and if I can manage it in the next year or so???? I'm going to crochet myself a lovely jacket it's not a sock but it is wool,so wish me luck and don't hold you collective breaths for a photo until about 2017 Mary
all you need is love and chocolate
Thank you to everyone for the lovely comments I recieve on my Gallery Mary x

Re: knitted socks
Looking forward to seeing your crocheted jacket Mary! I love crochet, I taught myself from watching you tube tutorials... No one in my family crocheted!!! Only learned last year and made a nice throw for our sofa bed on our narrowboat from the basic granny squares. It looks great. I'm in the process of making another one this time in pastel lilacs, yellows and whites for our bed at home. I have just bought some lovely crocheted thread from Hobbycraft on line. It's DMC SIZE 3 and was 3 for 2 so worked out quite reasonable. I'm going to use this to make some flowers. They should turn out quite delicate looking. I'm going to turn them into brooches. Mrs N...Regarding the knitted socks ... Mine are knitted on 2.25mm needles and I tend to knit quite tight. I tried my first sock on and it fit perfect. Sock 2 is almost finished, just working my way to the toe shaping. As for knitting a sock quickly.... Well my problem is that, as my OH says, I am a butterfly. I constantly flit between projects. I start one thing, break off, onto another, break off, back to the next ... Quite exhausting really plus I am then thinking of the next thing I want to do. I have so many ideas that I have to write them down... Otherwise I forget! Thank goodness I took early retirement otherwise I would be really frustrated! It's weird really, because when I go to our boat I can sit for hours just crocheting or knitting, but when I'm at home I have access to too many things... Paper crafts, crochet, knitting so jump from one to the other... And that can be during one day!!! I think the are others out there that 'flit around' like me!!!......or am I the only one? Anyway sounds like everyone here is having fun with new or rekindled past times... And so long as it keeps us happy - that's the main thing. Angela

Re: knitted socks
It has been years since I knitted a pair of socks on 4 needles but never found the heel turning difficult, sure I could pick it up again easy if I wished.Mostly now knit cardigans and jumpers for grandchildren or myself. That is my evening relaxation whilst watch the TV which is not often very interesting. I never learned to crochet, maybe I should follow one of the u-tube videos,I am sure I would enjoy that craft also. Nice to see some of the projects posted here or in the galleries. Adrienne

Re: knitted socks
When I had my knitting machine I used to knit a tube, the old French knitting in a wooden Cotten bobbin with 4 nails, then I used to make the tube into a flower that looked really nice on a jumper or hat I did go to a club then and all the ladies were very experienced knitting machinists but I had had mine very long and they were all fascinated by these tubes as no one had done them on a machine. Think everyone had the flowers after that Xxxx
