Which Sewing Machine
Hi I was wondering if anyone had any advice about buying a new sewing machine. Not necessarily which machine because I know everyone wants a machine to do different things but which brand really. If any one can recommend a brand or have experience of poor customer service it would help me choose which make to go for and then I can decide which model. I'd be grateful for your input on this. Sharon x

Re: Which Sewing Machine
Hi Sharon, if you are able to get to a john Lewis store they usually have a good range of makes and if you call them before hand to check if they have a demonstrator coming in or available in store. I haven't done any sewing for a long while but invested in a Janome quite a few years ago and was very pleased with it. i was a bit ambitious at the time as i wanted to try some embroidery on fabric to add to cards but i never went down that route, but also ended up buying a small one that was unbranded as such, just with the JL name on it, especially just to stitch on card. Its a pain to thread but stitches well. Years ago I had a singer and it got well used, I used to make my own clothes but sadly the machine got dropped and although superglue worked well to repair damage it never felt the same again :o but that was all year ago now! I'm sure all makes have changed so much over the years with modern technology, it would be best to see if you can see some working. Some even have automatic needle threading cartridges. I wish mine had that lol but it does have a little assister bar that does help. I think mine can also do quilting but it's never been used for it lol I only wet for the Janome after being allowed to try one out in store. Shame you don't live closer you could have come and had a play lol my machine could do with using lol xx

Re: Which Sewing Machine
Hi Sharon I have a Bernina and a Husqvarna and I like them both my Bernina is a quite expensive embroidery machine which is wonderful but might not be what you are looking for the best thing to do in my opinion is to go to the Knitting and Stitching exhibition if you possibly can as you can see everything that is available there from really expensive to quite nice machines by people like Silver. I bought a Silver overlocking machine years ago and it has given my wonderful service I have bought all my machines from a local shop as they do repairs and maintenance and that is a big bonus Over the yers I have used my machines a lot and have had no major problems with either H0pe this helps Mary x
all you need is love and chocolate
Thank you to everyone for the lovely comments I recieve on my Gallery Mary x

Re: Which Sewing Machine
Hi Sharon I think Janome is one of the best makes you can buy but a bit pricey. I have just purchased a brother sewing machine from Argos for £80 and it works really well, wasnt sure i would get into sewing so didnt want to spend too much! Claire xx

Re: Which Sewing Machine
Thank you ladies for your useful replies. I have contacted John Lewis in Nottingham who have said they can book an appointment for someone to demonstrate machines for me. So I intend to take them up on their offer hopefully when I break up from school in July. thanks once again Sharon x

Re: Which Sewing Machine
Their customer service is excellent. A good idea Sharon. Good luck with your hunt. I had a Singer for years and years that finally died and now have a Silver that the OH bought me as a surprise. I haven't used it to it's full potential yet tho as it does umpteen different decorative stitches and has loads of sewing feet with various functions. Mary, I know is an experienced seamstress and will give good advice.
I really appreciate all your lovely comments on my projects. Your feedback is very important to me.
Lyn xx

Re: Which Sewing Machine
Cant fault John Lewis' for customer service bought my youngest a Mac computer from there when she got it home found it was the wrong one took it back straight away they put her to the top of the list for when the new model came in and gave us £100 as an apology and in recognition of the hassle it caused in having to go back to sort it out. Re: Which Sewing Machine
Sorry I can't help. My Singer portable machine is 40 now and still working perfectly. Touch wood, I hope I haven't jinxed it now.
