Meet Siobhan Harrison the Illustrator Behind Dovecraft Cupcake Boutique

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I originally trained in Fashion and printed Textiles BA (Hons) arts degree. Having specialized originally in Fashion and printed textile Design. I went on to work in the fashion industry both in London and New York designing printed textiles for women's wear. I completed further training in illustration on a short course at Central St. Martins as I had a keen interest in drawing and wanted to work as a children’s book illustrator. I now have illustrated over twenty five Children’s Books. After leaving College I had several ranges of Greeting Cards published. I worked for several years in-house for Marks and Spencer's illustrating Greeting Cards for the Everyday Card Department also working in the Christmas and Stationery Departments. I also worked in-house for other Greeting Card Companies in London who supplied to the high street.

When did you first realise that you had a passion for Illustration/design?
I have always drawn as my parents were both at art college, so from the year dot I was drawing at the kitchen table.

Which other Illustrators/designers do you look up to?
I was influenced by books I had as a child. Jan Pienoswki was one illustrator whose books I loved and I had some lovely illustrated Fairy Tales by Hilda Offen whose books are embedded in my Psyche. I also love the painter Diego Rivera’s work.

What advice would you give to the future generation of illustrators/designers?

Keep Drawing.

Where do you get your inspiration for your Illustrations/designs?
Living in Brighton is very inspiring as it has a lot of Vintage style markets and shops also lots of outlets for local creative talent. I collect good photos of flowers so I use these to paint from a lot. I also collect Vintage ceramics so I often draw these.

Do you like to craft?
I have always made things so yes I like to craft. I sew stuff when I get the time particularly fashion alterations. My parents were involved in the craft industry when I was a child, so it’s interesting to see how the craft industry has developed.

What is your favourite Trimcraft collection so far?
My favourite collection is always the current project I am working on, i am currently working on a new collection for Trimcraft for SS14, more to be revealed soon!

What trends can we expect to see from you in the future?
I am influenced by what I see around me whether it be Fashion/Illustration Paintings or Craft/local Creative Open Houses that they have in Brighton.
I tend to filter new trends from everywhere. I have a passion for all things Vintage at the moment so more Vintage inspired trends.

Do you have any hobbies?
I have taken up fifties jive which I love and I get to get wear Vintage inspired outfits.
