DIY Personalised Father’s Day T- Shirt Tutorial Using the Cricut Explore

The Cricut Explore is our new favourite craft tool, with 1000’s of images at your fingertips. A popular accessory of the Explore is the Cricut® Iron-on Lite, a heat transfer film which can be applied quickly and easily to many surfaces to create personalised clothes, home décor and more! We thought it would be perfect for our father’s day crafting!

Note: If you don’t have access to a Cricut Explore you can still use the Cricut Iron on Lite film on your project, use stencils to help you cut the film to shape.

How to Make

1.  First create your design for your t-shirt, we simply went for ‘Dad’ in a bold front for our tutorial but there are some great suggestions on the Cricut Design Space™ if you want to go for something more personal. You can also upload your own personal designs!

2.  Make sure to mirror image your design before cutting. Follow the prompts on the screen to cut your image. Remove the negative Cricut® Iron-on film using the weeding tool found in the Cricut Tool Kit to make it easier and faster to remove. You will be left with only the desired cut image on the liner.

3.  Time to decorate your t-shirt, fold your t-shirt to the desired size you want your paint splatters to reach and place in a cardboard box to keep your workspace tidy.

4.  Add a small amount of your fabric paints into plastic cups and dip the brush end of your paintbrush into the paint and splatter onto the t-shirt. It’s lots of fun, get your children involved in making this Father’s Day gift by letting them splatter some paint on the t-shirt! Put your t-shirt to one side until completely dry.

5.  To iron your text, set your iron to the Cotton/Linen setting and ensure the steam setting is off. Use the iron to pre-heat the area of the material where you will be applying your cut image to for 10-15 seconds.

6.  Place your image, liner side up, onto the pre-heated material. Cover with a cloth and apply medium pressure with the iron for 25-30 seconds and then flip the t-shirt over and apply the same pressure to the back of the fabrics for an extra 25-30 seconds. Leave the image to cool before removing the lining.
