5 ways with: the NEW Dovecraft Essentials Gift Bags

In today’s post, our Marketing Exec Alli has created 5 fun gift bags to inspire your next gift wrapping project – using lots of exciting new products from Dovecraft Essentials!

I do love a good gift bag. I genuinely count it as part of the gift – and often a beautiful gift bag lasts longer than the gift inside (especially if the inside gift is gin!) Every Christmas, when swapping gifts with my family, the same bags go round and round – it feels like some sort of weird achievement when you receive a gift bag back that you’d gifted in last year! Does every family do that, or is mine just weird?

Anyway – I’ve decided that making my own personalised, DIY gift bags is even better than finding really pretty ones in the back of the pound shop (although I do still really enjoy that..!) Unfortunately I’m completely useless with measurements, so cutting and folding my own bags is a bit of a lost cause – lucky for me then, that Dovecraft have just added both Gift Bags and Bottle Bags to their Essentials line. You have no idea how excited I was when they landed on my desk!

But of course a blank ‘canvas’ (even if that canvas is not a canvas at all, but a gift bag) can be a bit daunting, especially when you’re tackling it for the first time. So for a little inspiration, I’ve created 5 different gift bags, using different styles and techniques, to get you started!

Almost all the embellishments I’ve used are also from the Dovecraft Essentials line (with a cheeky cameo from a recent Paper Addicts pad and our new Spiin yarn), making these projects super affordable to create!

Pom Pom Gift Bag

This colourful little gift bag is a bundle of fun – and it’s super simple to put together, too! With no glue needed, this is a great one to get kids involved in making.

You will need:

- Dovecraft Essentials White Gift Bag

- Dovecraft Essentials Pom Poms (in Blue, Purple and Yellow)

- Spiin Yarn

- Tag Punch or Die

- Dot & Dab Perma Fix 24mm & 3mm

How to make:

1. First, punch or die cut a tag shape from white card. Cover with Dot & Dab Perma Fix 24mm and trim any excess. Don’t forget to re-punch the hole to thread the tag later on!

2. Remove the top layer of one of your pieces of tape and start sticking on your Dovecraft Essentials Pom Poms. I found it helpful to start with larger ones and fill in the gaps as I went. Press down firmly to ensure they don’t come unstuck. Repeat with the other pieces of tape on your tag until the entire tag is covered.

3. Stick a strip of Dot & Dab Perma Fix 24mm right across your gift bag, about 1/3rd of the way up the bag. Peel off back the red backing and cover with pom poms, just like you did for the tag.

4. Using Perma Fix 3mm, attach a few more pom poms to the bag as a finishing touch.

5. Finally, thread your pom pom tag and attach it to your gift bag – we used a leftover piece of Spiin Yarn.

Rose Gold Glitter Bottle Bag

A super glam bag for a super glam recipient – and perfect for filling with pink gin!

You will need:

- Dovecraft Essentials White Bottle Bag

- Dovecraft Essentials Extra Large Lollipop Sticks

- Wow Embossing Powder – Rose Gold

- Dovecraft Essentials Crafter’s Glue

- Dovecraft Rose Gold Glitter Card

- Simply Creative Basics Postbox and Letter Die

- Simply Creative Basics Rose Gold Mini Envelopes

- Tag punch or Die

- Ribbon

- We R Memory Keepers 1-2-3 Punch Board

- Dot & Dab Perma Fix

How to make:

1. Punch or die cut a tag from white card, then slip it inside a Simply Creative Basics Rose Gold Mini Envelope. Tape the envelope flap to the back to keep it in place.

2. Using the Simply Creative Postbox and Letter Die set, die cut the envelope from Dovecraft Rose Gold Glitter Card 5 times. Attach to the front side of your tag with little dabs of Dovecraft Crafter’s Glue.

3. Squirt a few blobs of glue onto your Dovecraft Extra Large Lollipop Sticks and spread loosely with a brush – you’re aiming for messy! Pour over the WOW Embossing Powder in Rose Gold, tap off the excess and heat set until the powder melts. I found it easier to do these in several batches – and the Dovecraft Messy Mat came in very handy!

4. Once your embossing is dry and the glue is set, attach your lollipop sticks to your bottle bag in a row using Dot & Dab Perma Fix.

5. Use the We R Memory Keepers 1-2-3 Punch Board to create a bow from Dovecraft Rose Gold Glitter Card – I used the largest measurements on the board. Attach over your lollipop sticks with more Dot & Dab Perma Fix.

6. Last of all, thread your tag with matching ribbon and tape the ends inside your bottle bag.

Birthday Shaker Glitter Gift Bag

A really great gender-neutral birthday gift bag (despite all the glitter!) that will totally wow your recipient, while being deceptively simple to make.

You will need:

- Dovecraft Essentials Kraft Gift Bag

- First Edition Build Your Own Cupcake Die Set

- Dovecraft Premium Glitter Card Pad – Classics

- Dovecraft Essentials Gold Foil Letter Tiles

- Simply Creative Basics Star Sequins – Gold & Silver

- Dovecraft Essentials Gold Foil Photo Frames

How to make:

1. To build the shaker element, stick a piece of acetate to the back of your Dovecraft Gold Foil Photo Frame to fill the open space, then fix foam tape around all the edges to create an open space in the middle. Make sure there aren’t any gaps! Fill the photo frame with the gold sequins from the Simply Creative Star Sequins pack, then peel off the foam tape backing and lay black glitter card over the top, pressing down where the foam tape is to firmly adhere.

2. Trim your black glitter card down until flush with the photo frame, then adhere 3 sequins over the acetate. Die cut 3 candles from gold glitter cardstock and ahere to the acetate window, tucking the bottoms between the photo frame and the acetate.

3. Cut a 4” wide strip of black glitter cardstock and adhere to the gift bag, about ¼ of the way up. Top with Dovecraft Gold Foil Letter Tiles, spelling ‘YAY’.

4. Lastly, adhere the shaker element to the front of your gift bag, at an angle. Make sure you use plenty of Perma Fix!

Tropical Bottle Bag

Bring a touch of tropical fun to a gift with this make – perfect for a bottle of spiced rum!

You will need:

- Dovecraft Essentials Kraft Bottle Bag

- Paper Addicts Tropical Bliss 12”x12” Paper Pad

- Dovecraft Essentials Wobble Toppers

- Tag punch

- Dovecraft Ribbon

- Dot & Dab Foam Tape

- Dot & Dab Double Sided Tape

How to make:

1. Fussy cut 3 parrots, 2 toucans and 9 lotus flowers from the Paper Addicts Tropical Bliss Paper Pad. Attach Wobble Toppers to the back of the parrots.

2. Cut strips of the tile patterned paper from the paper pad and adhere 4 strips to the bottle bag with double sided tape. Trim the ends so they are flush with the edges of the bottle bag.

3. Attach the wobble topped parrots to your bottle bag with double sided tape, then attach the toucans with foam tape. Scatter the lotus flowers in between (reserving one for the tag), attaching with more foam tape – I used thinner foam tape for these to add more dimension.

4. To make the tag, punch or die cut a tag shape from the remaining tile patterned paper. Adhere your remaining lotus flower to the front with foam tape, then thread with ribbon and tie on to your bag.

Woven Yarn Gift Bag

Got a few scraps of yarn lying around? This project is a great way to use them up – I love the jazzed-up handles!

You will need:

- Dovecraft Essentials Kraft Gift Bag

- Spiin Yarn (3 colours)

- Dovecraft Essentials Buttons

- Dot & Dab Perma Fix

How to make:

1. Measure 2cm in from the edge of the side of the gift bag and draw a pencil line from top to bottom. Repeat on the other side, then mark 5cm from the top of the gift bag and 4cm from the bottom on each line.

2. Using a craft knife, carefully cut through the top layer of the gift bag between your guide marks. You should now have a slit on each side of the gift bag. Erase your pencil lines before moving onto the next step.

3. Using your 3 colours of yarn, tape each end inside and weave between the slits on the bag, one colour at a time so you end up with stripes. I also strung some buttons in as I was doing the weaving for extra detail. Once you’ve finished, trim and tape the ends inside, then add tape over the weaving on the inside of your bag to stop it moving around.

4. To decorate the handles, attach Perma Fix along the length of the handle, then wind your leftover yarn around the handle, pressing firmly into the Perma Fix. Tape the ends inside to secure.

I hope my ideas give you some inspiration for your next gift wrapping project! Which design was your favourite? Let us know in the comments – I think mine is the pom poms!
